All of the casting techniques I found focus on getting the rod loaded with energy instead of using your arm strength to heave your rig. Accomplishing this requires extending your arms throughout the cast. Most of us keep our arms in tight while casting which takes most of the power out of the cast. The other key element is using the arm and hand holding the rod near the reel as a fulcrum and snapping down with the arm and hand holding the bottom of the rod at the end of the cast.
Another important part of these casting techniques is where to end your casting stroke and release the line. The best advice I could find, and what works for me, is to set your sights to a forty-five degree angle to the horizon and release when your rod reaches that point.
This cast is very similar to the Pendulum cast. The swinging of the terminal tackle is different and requires less room around you than the Pendulum. I ended up choosing this cast after experimenting with the others and have never looked back.
I like this video series because the casting demonstration is from the world record holding caster. Seeing Tommy Farmer show a surf fisherman how to improve his cast on the spot was a real eye opener for me.
I watched this tutorial video by Tommy Farmer to get my technique working. I watched the slow motion section a number of times to get my footwork coordinated with my arms. I like Tommy Farmer, he is excellent at describing and demonstrating casts as well as being an accomplished competitive caster and surf fisherman. I encourage you to visit his website, Carolina Cast Pro. and check out his DVD “Comprehensive Guide to Power Casting“.
